French Napoleonic Placenames of the South West Coast
By Leslie R Marchant

Of the different nations which explored and charted the western side of Australia and left their mark with geographic names such as the Dutch Cape Leeuwin, Napoleonic France made the most distinctive contribution. When Napoleon was rising to power, the Baudin expedition, the largest scientific expedition ever to leave Europe, was sent to complete the charting of the continent and scientifically describe its environment and its natural history contents. After the expedition returned to France, on the eve of Napoleon being crowned emperor, French cartographers produced new charts with geographical names which extended from Esperance in the south to Joseph Bonaparte Gulf in the north.

This volume focuses on the south-west corner of the state where Napoleonic France made a most distinctive impression. Modern explorers who follow in the wake of the French will not only find that they are traveling through a beautiful land now famous for its quality wines, but also will be journeying through French cultural history at the period of Napoleon.

The book is based on over 50 years research by the author, supplemented by information contained in articles written by the author for the new forthcoming edition of the French Dictionary of National Biography.
