Todhunter Literary Award
1st Prize: WILLIAM TODHUNTER AWARD
Founded by the Victoria Park Public Library Inc. (1913) in 1994 to honour the life and service of William Todhunter to the town and people of Victoria Park; a working class suburb with its own culture.
2nd Prize: LESLIE MARCHANT PRIZE for Prose
Established in 2006 in order to honour the life and service of Leslie R Marchant AM, the inaugural judge (1994-2002) of the Todhunter Literary Award, who set the standards of excellence and literary quality which are the hallmarks of the Award.
JOHN JOSEPH JONES PRIZE for Drama
In recognition of Joseph Jones's literary, dramatic and musical contribution to Western Australia, and his remarkable achievement in the creation of the Parkerville Amphitheatre. John Joseph Jones won the Todhunter Literary Award in 1995 for "The Harvesters" and encouraged the inclusion of drama along with story and essay in the Award.
CURRENT LITERARY JUDGE
Associate Professor Delys Bird is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow in English, Communication and Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia, a long-time co-editor of Westerly, one of Australia's leading literary journals, and has published widely in Australian literary and cultural studies, including books on Elizabeth Jolley and Katharine Susannah Prichard.
INAUGURAL JUDGE FOR THE TODHUNTER LITERARY AWARD (1994 - 2002)
Leslie R Marchant was an eminent scholar and author, particularly of the influence and scientific discoveries of the French on the Western Australian coastline, Professor Marchant was a founding patron and historical adviser to the Woodside Valley Foundation. This Foundation has a profound interest in the preservation of the early maritime history of Western Australia; thus in preserving Leslie Marchant's historical work. It is pleased to have a role in the continuation of the traditions of the Todhunter Literary Award.
THE JUDGING PROCESS
Each entry received is recorded by the Secretary. After the closing date, anonymous numbered entries are passed to the Judge for adjudication. A shortlist is established, the Judge then consults with an advisory panel, and submits the names of prizewinners. The entries are returned to the Secretary, who will advise all entrants of the results by mail.
